Overview

How the Prize Fund Works

Prize funding comes from two sources:

Prize Fund is the sum of: 75% of donations + 80% of entry fees.

Donations (tax-deductible)
  • Minimum donation: $10.
  • 75% goes to the Prize Fund.
  • Up to 20% goes to schools as a thank-you for helping fundraise. A school qualifies for the 20% share once its students collectively raise at least $1,000.
  • 5% goes to the charity's administrative costs.
Entry Fees
  • Entry fee: $2 per entry; retake any single contest for $1.
  • 80% goes to the Prize Fund.
  • 20% helps cover platform, website, and operational costs (well below common nonprofit admin benchmarks).

Prize Structure

Goal: Raise at least $1,250,000 in total (donations + entry fees). Why $1.25M? Because with our standard splits (donations: 75% to Prize Fund, up to 20% to schools, 5% admin; entry fees: 80% to Prize Fund), a total of about $1.25M (mix of donations + entries) is expected to yield at least $1,000,000 for prizes.

Total Raised Prize Plan
≥ $1,250,000 100 prizes × $10,000 each (partial college scholarships), plus all remaining funds distributed as additional $1,000 educational awards to the next top scorers until fully allocated.
Example: $1,500,000 Illustration (mix varies): If the $1.5M total includes enough donations to reach the schools’ 20% cap, then $300,000 from the donations portion is first allocated to participating schools. Of the remaining funds, $1,000,000 goes to fund 100 × $10,000 partial college scholarships. The balance (e.g., $200,000 in this illustration) provides 200 additional $1,000 educational awards.
< $1,250,000 We award $1,000 educational awards to as many students as possible (every full $1,000 available = one $1,000 award).
Example: $500,000 After allocating the schools’ share from the donations portion (if any) and standard admin fees, the remaining Prize Fund is used for 400 $1,000 educational awards (every full $1,000 available = one $1,000 award).

Tax note: We design awards to avoid creating taxable income for families where possible, but tax situations vary by country and individual circumstance. Please consult a tax advisor.
